Michigan Assault Laws
Michigan’s assault laws are found in Michigan Compiled Laws (MCL) 750.81. Under Michigan law, there are three different types of assault:
- Felonious Assault: is a felony offense and is defined as an assault with the intent to do great bodily harm less than murder or with a dangerous weapon.
- Aggravated Assault: is also a felony offense and is defined as an assault that causes serious or aggravated injury.
Simple Assault: is a misdemeanor offense and is defined as an unlawful attack by one person against another.
Michigan Self Defense Laws
Michigan law provides that you can use force against another person in order to protect yourself from imminent harm. This means that if you reasonably believe that you are about to be harmed, you can use force against the other person in order to defend yourself. However, it is important to note that there are certain limitations to Michigan’s self-defense laws. For example, you can only use the amount of force that is necessary to protect yourself from harm, and you cannot use deadly force unless you reasonably believe that you are in danger of serious bodily injury or death.
