I consider the 44th District my “home court”. This is where I am most often. Everyone knows me including court staff, probation officers, court clerks and even security and maintenance staff. The Royal Oak City Attorneys are great. I have been friends with Ryan Kaluzny and his family since I was in law school seventeen years ago. Mark Liss is one of the smartest people I know; he is very interesting and knowledgeable. I have immense respect for both of them. And I have no doubt that the respect is mutual.
I have great respect for the Royal Oak District Court judges as well. Judge Derek Meinecke was elected has been on the bench since 2013. I publically supported him and am proud to have done so. I have known Derek well for over a decade while he was an Oakland County Prosecuting Attorney. I have never had a problem with him and he has always been good to me. Many of us defense attorneys have told him that we have confidence in him to be impartial despite the fact that he spent his career as a prosecutor. Time will continue to tell but I think the City of Royal Oak is in good judicial hands for a long time.
Judge James L. Wittenberg has recently taken the bench at 44th District with the retirement of Terrence Brennan. Judge Wittenberg has come to Royal Oak from the 45-A District Court in Berkley and is a fine judge.
All that said, I don’t have a problem going to battle for my clients in this court. I will do whatever I believe is necessary to win. I have no interest in practicing law so that “everyone likes me”. I would like to believe that my hard work, knowledge and tenacity is respected everywhere, particularly at the 44th District.
